Scania-ADL gas-powered demonstrator takes to the road

gas-powered bus photoWith all preparatory work completed, the Scania-ADL gas-powered bus demonstration vehicle is now ready to begin its programme of operator trials and evaluations around the UK. Such are the levels of interest in this all-new, Green Bus Funding-compliant vehicle, that the demonstration period is expected to last for around a year.

To support operators wishing to try gas-power for themselves, a mobile fuelling station capable of refuelling the vehicle in approximately eight minutes after a typical day’s service has been developed.

Featuring a Scania K UB4x2 chassis with a 270 horsepower Scania OG9 G04 engine, the vehicle is capable of operating on either Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) or Bio Natural Gas (BNG). The engine offers high efficiency and low fuel consumption with no need for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). It is based on the same platform as Scania’s modular-build 9.3-litre diesel engine, which limits the number of new components required for the low entry gas chassis to around 40 items.

The 12.2-metre overall length ADL Enviro 300SG body provides seating for a total of 40 passengers. The driver’s seat, Transito saloon seats, rear five-person seating unit and wheelchair bump pad are all finished in e-leather green with cream piping, with the wheelbox and tip-up seats finished in green only. Complementing the seating is Tara bus Gaya Wood 4521 Yellowstone flooring and cool white interior LED lighting.  The vehicle has Hanover electronic type destination equipment with LED illumination. The demonstrator is also equipped with wi-fi and a Synectics 7 camera CCTV system.
