MAN Truck & Bus is making its Europe-wide service initiative tangibly visible: with the groundbreaking ceremony for a new sales and service branch in Castanheira do Ribatejo north of Lisbon, the company is achieving the first visible milestone as part of its largest ever service investment. MAN is investing a total of around €300 million by 2030 in the expansion and further development of its European service network – made possible by the “MAN2030+” efficiency programme, which specifically creates scope for growth and innovation investments. The Portuguese location is the first visible component of an investment wave that will lead to new or modernised MAN sites in numerous European markets over the coming years.
Portugal as one of the first components of a Europe-wide service initiative
With the €300 million, MAN aims to further densify its already exceptionally strong service network and prepare it for the mobility of tomorrow. Throughout Europe, the company has around 1,200 MAN-owned and partner operations with a total of around 7,000 employees at MAN facilities. Goal of the investment initiative: in future, around 80 per cent of MAN customers should be able to reach the nearest MAN service location in less than 30 minutes. Around one-third of the planned investments will flow specifically into electric mobility and digitalisation – from high-voltage training for service employees through to battery repair centres and the establishment of publicly accessible charging points at MAN branches.
“The groundbreaking ceremony in Portugal demonstrates that we are implementing the announced service initiative very quickly. We are investing consistently where our customers need us – with modern infrastructure, short distances and a service network that is excellently prepared for both conventional drivetrains and electric mobility,” says Friedrich Baumann, Member of the Board of Management for Sales & Customer Solutions at MAN. “The fact that the first visible groundbreaking is taking place in Portugal also underlines how important strong market position and customer proximity are to us.”
State-of-the-art infrastructure for customers in a strategic logistics hub
On a site of around 28,000 square metres in Castanheira do Ribatejo, a building with approximately 4,000 square metres of usable space is being constructed. The new centre will offer 16 service bays for different vehicle types, enabling simultaneous servicing of lorries and buses. Additionally, there will be a dedicated area for refurbishing used vehicles, a high-performance parts warehouse for rapid spare parts availability, as well as technical and commercial training areas. Fully digital diagnostic and reception systems will ensure efficient and customer-oriented service processes.
In line with MAN’s decarbonisation strategy, the new site will integrate electric mobility solutions from the outset, including charging stations for heavy and light commercial vehicles – some of which will be publicly accessible. The location in one of Portugal’s most important logistics areas north of Lisbon, with excellent multimodal connections, makes the site a strategic hub for customers in both national and international transport operations. With the new centre, MAN Truck & Bus Portugal is expanding its national network from eight to nine sales and service locations on the Portuguese mainland.
“This is a very important moment for MAN Truck & Bus Portugal. These new facilities represent not only an investment in the present, but above all a clear commitment to the future, to our ability to grow, innovate and provide better service to our customers and partners,” says David Carlos, Managing Director MAN Truck & Bus Portugal. Completion of the new branch is scheduled for December 2027.
Portugal: A market of great importance to MAN
Portugal makes a stable and continuously growing contribution to MAN’s results for the entire region. In recent years, MAN has regularly been among the top three suppliers in the truck segment in Portugal. In the 2025 financial year, MAN achieved a market share of 18.5 per cent, becoming market leader in the Portuguese truck market for the first time. The company successfully confirmed this leading position in the first quarter of 2026 as well.
MAN is also firmly established in other segments in Portugal: in the bus business, the company achieved a market share of 11.5 per cent in 2025, whilst in the van segment 236 MAN TGE vehicles were sold. This success is supported by a dedicated team of 150 employees at the national sales company. The investment in Castanheira do Ribatejo underlines MAN’s ambition to sustainably consolidate this growth and to offer its customers in Portugal a dense, high-performance service offering equipped for the mobility of tomorrow in the years to come.
