An area the size of Belgium, criss-crossed with some of the highest roads in Britain, was the daunting winter maintenance task that faced BEAR Scotland when the company won the contract to maintain and manage the 1,400 km of trunk roads in north west Scotland in April 2013. Even when other parts of Britain are undergoing relatively mild winters, Scotland's North West often faces seasonal onslaughts of blizzards, ice and snowdrifts that can make roads impassable and life difficult for its inhabitants.

Councils see RED over Gritting legislation change

On the 1st November 2013 legislation changed which now permits councils to use Agricultural Vehicles to spread salt on the public highway.

On the 1st November 2013 legislation changed which now permits Agricultural Vehicles to spread salt on the public highway using red diesel, when previously they could snowplough only. Two councils who are pleased to see the change in this legislation are North Yorkshire County Council and Bradford Metropolitan District Council who recognised the usefulness of Tractors and Agricultural Vehicles as winter maintenance tools a number of years ago.
