HGV operators have been advised that it is time to re-evaluate their fuel cards with a ‘win/win’ check. Steve Clarke, General Manager of The Fuelcard People, said: “Every haulier knows that using fuel cards means cutting fuel costs, but may not realise how big the differences can be between fuel cards. It matters because when they signed up for their current fuel cards, very few firms checked the whole market. Not having the best possible deal means losing money.”
Comparing fuel cards is common sense: “You have to compare the fuel market,” Steve Clarke said, “or you can not be sure of having the best fuel card for your needs. At the very least, compare the benefits of all of the ‘Big Five’ in fuel: BP, Esso, Shell, Texaco and Total. Even better, check the specialist networks, Diesel Direct (Keyfuels) and UK Fuels, at the same time.”
Most suppliers to HGV firms have a limited range, typically offering just two or three options and with some surprising omissions. BP has the widest motorway coverage, for example, but is offered by very few fuel card suppliers. If an HGV operator regularly uses motorways, but did not consider BP when making their original choice, they may now be missing significant benefits.
Steve Clarke urged operators to check that they really do have the best fuel card for their needs. “If your current supplier offers a limited range, talk to someone who covers every major brand and has no vested interest in pushing you towards any particular fuel card. It should only take you a few moments to find either a better deal or peace of mind. Comparing everything on the market should be a fast, simple ‘win/win’ check.”
