Daimler Truck establishes semi-public charging network for trucks

Pilot project successfully implemented with freight forwarder Diez, other pilot customers such as Wessels active since October.

Daimler Truck is pushing ahead with the development of charging facilities for battery-electric trucks and is launching a semi-public charging network under the TruckCharge brand. The first pilot customer, transport company Wessels in Rhede in North Rhine-Westphalia, has been live since the beginning of October, followed in December by freight forwarder Diez with its charging park in Dettingen unter Teck in Baden-Württemberg. The official rollout in Germany and Austria is planned for the first quarter of 2026. By 2030, the TruckCharge network is expected to comprise more than 3,000 fast-charging points in Europe.

The new “semi-public charging” offering enables companies to open their own charging points to external users at times when they are not needed for their own purposes. This is intended to generate additional revenue for operators and create a more comprehensive truck charging network for the industry. As the initiator and driver of the TruckCharge network, Daimler Truck brings together the relevant players and provides access to a Europe-wide platform for planning, booking, reserving, and paying for charging processes. Operational and technical implementation is carried out from a single source by technology partner Spirii, an Edenred company which provides an advanced eMobility platform including a Charge Point Management System (CPMS) for depot operators, an eMobility Service Provider (eMSP) solution for fleets and a charging app for drivers.

Alexander Müller, Head of Zero Emission Vehicle Business Solutions Mercedes-Benz Trucks, explains: “With semi-public charging, we are creating a solution that offers our customers and partners real added value. We combine the advantages of our own charging infrastructure with the opportunity to use it more efficiently while increasing availability for the entire industry. Our goal is to make the transition to electric mobility as easy as possible for freight forwarders and transport companies. By making better use of existing resources, we are reducing costs for operators and creating additional sources of revenue. At the same time, we are helping to expand the urgently needed charging infrastructure for heavy commercial vehicles more quickly. This is a crucial step in driving forward the transformation of the transport sector towards emission-free solutions.”

Tore Harritshøj, CEO and co-founder of Spirii, adds: “The severe lack of charging options for heavy commercial vehicles is one of the biggest obstacles to the widespread electrification of the transport sector. It is therefore all the more gratifying that Daimler Truck is establishing a semi-public network for the entire industry. At Spirii, we are proud to contribute our expertise in intelligent charging solutions to support the rollout of the TruckCharge Network and accelerate the transition to electric transport.”

Cooperation with Spirii as key technology

Spirii’s software platform enables the management, monitoring, and opening of charging points for external users, while operators retain full control over access and pricing. Spirii is an international provider of e-mobility solutions based in Copenhagen and active in over 22 European markets. The company provides a modular software platform that caters to infrastructure owners and e-mobilitiy service providers, and offers billing solutions for companies, fleets, and charging point operators. The TruckCharge Connect software solution offers charging point operators a powerful charge point management system and enables guests to easily search for, book, and use charging points—including transparent pricing information and integration of third-party providers via roaming. The TruckCharge app complements the offering with mobile access and convenient operation on the go.

Addition to public charging

The semi-public network of TruckCharge is intended to complement the public charging offering provided, among others, by Milence. The focus of the joint venture, founded in 2022 by Daimler Truck, the Traton Group, and the Volvo Group, is on charging stations located along motorways and major traffic routes.
