In an important conquest deal, Hermes, the UK’s leading consumer delivery specialist, has taken its first Renault trucks on contract hire from BRS into its 600-strong DAF dominated fleet. Following a six-way tender process, BRS was awarded the contract to supply 17 Renault Premium 430.18 4×2 tractor units on a five year full contract hire deal and 10 Renault Midlum 180.12 12 tonners with box bodies and tail lifts on a six year full contract hire deal. The competitive whole life costs of the Renault trucks together with the flexibility and service levels provided by BRS sealed the deal.
The Renault Premiums went on the road in October, operating from Hermes’ hubs at Warrington and Nuneaton. Part of the company’s 200-strong trunking fleet, the Premiums transport sorted parcels for leading high street, catalogue and online retailers to Hermes’ nationwide network of local depots. The 12 tonne Renault Midlums will join the company’s radial fleets in Thurrock, Swindon and Dunstable at the end of November and replace 7.5 tonne DAFs. The 400-strong radial fleets collect from the company’s local depots and deliver to Hermes’ sub depots or direct to its 9,500 lifestyle couriers or 3,000 ParcelShops.
Commenting on the decision to introduce Renault trucks into an almost exclusively DAF fleet, Rob Elmore, Fleet Services Manager, Hermes, says: “For us the time was right to try a different supplier and a different make of vehicle to ensure that we are getting best value in the market. We evaluated total life costs, including fuel consumption and reliability, and BRS with Renault Trucks offered a good solution. We have tried both BRS and the Renault Premiums for short term hire and the experience has been positive. BRS deliver on service, while the Premiums are strong on fuel and the drivers like the gearbox.”
For Hermes, volume is key, which is why the company is moving from 7.5 tonnes to 12 tonnes for its radial fleet. Rob Elmore continues: “Our Midlums will be fitted with a 25 foot body with tail lift, a big body for a 12 tonner, but for us it’s a volume game. 12 tonnes is a very important and a growing sector for us that delivers extra capacity, payload and productivity.”
Vehicle reliability and efficiency are essential for Hermes, which handles more than 160 million collections and deliveries every year for its retail customers, and the high levels of back up and support provided by the Renault Trucks UK network was a deciding factor.
Tony Cracknell, Sales Manager, BRS Ltd comments: “This is an exciting opportunity for both BRS and Renault Trucks to establish ourselves with an expanding blue chip customer in the challenging parcel delivery sector. After demonstrating the Renaults’ impressive fuel returns, we have striven to provide a comprehensive and flexible package that will support the Renault product and allow Hermes to continue to meet the demands of the extremely competitive market for years to come.”
