DuPont Refinish and Plaxton photoIn 2011 bus and coachbuilder Plaxton started working with DuPont Refinish and the results of this partnership are already truly eye-catching.

Part of the Alexander Dennis Group, Plaxton, based in Scarborough, has supplied buses and coaches with trend-setting designs to the passenger transport industry for 100 years. It is the largest coachbuilder in the UK, with an estimated 20,000 of its vehicles currently in service around the world, making it a true market leader.

In 2012 Plaxton is scheduled to build 125 luxury coaches, all of which to be painted using the highly productive DuPont Refinish waterborne basecoat Cromax, in a range of metallic colours. Plaxton also uses the DuPont Refinish Imron Elite clearcoat which gives a very impressive overall finish.

Ray Clarkson, the Plaxton manufacturing team leader, says: “Last year we decided to change our paint supplier. We wanted exactly what DuPont Refinish offers – more than just paint. We were looking to work with an environmentally-responsible brand who could also supply us with an efficient, high-end product. We trialled several, but DuPont Refinish was the only one that ticked all the boxes. Not only does Cromax meet the strict EU VOC emission legislation requirements, but it represents a significant cost-saving thanks to the increased productivity it provides.”

During the switch to Cromax, training at Plaxton was an on-going affair. With a workforce operating on full 24-hour shifts, training was carried out on-site over several weeks. Clarkson continues: “It takes about 185 hours to paint each of the luxury vehicles with two to six operators working on them at any one time. The team at DuPont Refinish made itself available to fit in with our busy working schedule, so all our operators have received the training required with little or no disruption. It was a very smooth transition”.

Plaxton built the flagship Elite coach built for Prospect Coaches of Halesowen as well as the Parks of Hamilton/Stagecoach Goldliner coach, finishing them both with DuPont Refinish paints. When these two coaches were shown at the 2011 Coach Show at the NEC in Birmingham, the response was phenomenal.

Lindsey Swaine, DuPont Refinish brand marketing coordinator, says, “the Plaxton expertise combined with DuPont Refinish paints means whatever design is required, it can be produced. We couldn’t be happier with the results Plaxton is achieving using Cromax on these impressive vehicles.”

Clarkson concludes: “We are currently working on a fleet of 18 new, City of Oxford coaches which need to look fantastic – Cromax® helps us to achieve great results whilst staying productive. And for me, this just reinforces the fact that we made the right decision to choose DuPont Refinish. We look forward to building on this strong and dynamic partnership for years to come.”
