This year’s Commercial Vehicle Show, held at Birmingham’s NEC from 9-11 April 2013, is set to be the busiest for Mercedes-Benz, as the company unveils its new product line-up.
Stretching from a compact urban delivery van, the New Citan, to a heavy-hauling construction vehicle, the Arocs, there’s also plenty in between. In fact, Mercedes-Benz is debuting five new vehicles on stand 5D10 in Hall 5. New Actros, launched in April 2012, is now the “oldest” vehicle in the Mercedes-Benz truck range!
Perhaps the biggest product on the stand is actually the smallest in the range. The New Citan marks the start of a completely new product and offering – and this year’s CV Show is the first place where it’s fully exhibited.
“At next week’s CV Show we’re showcasing a wealth of new products, showing that Mercedes-Benz is making enormous investments across the range to deliver efficient, safe, cost-effective commercial vehicles for operators that help drive British businesses forward,” commented Marcus Breitschwerdt, President and CEO Mercedes-Benz UK Ltd.

Although I have attended many times in a previous life, this will be my first CV Show as Managing Director of Commercial Vehicles. I, along with over 90 of my UK CV colleagues, will be on the stand for the duration of the CV Show to meet current and future customers, and to discuss their needs – and our products and services. A true Mercedes?Benz at first glance: the Mercedes?Benz Citan’s confident look is unmistakable. The characteristic appearance revolves around the confidently displayed, chrome-plated star in the prominent and sturdy radiator grille with its three sporty, perforated fins. The Citan’s distinctive headlamps and the arrow-shaped bonnet with its clearly defined edges are no less striking.

The new Vito Effect is a special edition with real substance, combining the alluring styling and exciting driving characteristics of the Vito Sport with an efficient 113 CDI Euro 5 engine.
The Vito Effect features an exclusive body kit including chrome radiator grille, 18” light alloy wheels, colour-coded bumpers and exterior side skirts as standard. Also included are the standard safety elements provided on all Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles including ADAPTIVE ESP® Electronic Stability Programme, Belt tensioners for driver and passenger, driver’s front airbag, halogen fog lights and three-point seat belts for all seats.
The state-of-the-art four cylinder CDI engine sets standards in terms of economy and sustainability – and naturally it delivers everything you would expect from a van bearing the three-pointed star: first-rate workmanship, legendary durability, and unique reliability.

Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid
The new factory built Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid was introduced into the UK in November 2012 and is making its CV Show debut this year.
In 2008 Fuso entered a three-year, London-based Hybrid trial, the largest in Europe, with partners Amey, DHL, Hill Hire, Royal Mail, Ringway, Scottish & Southern, Tesco and TNT. These trial vehicles, based on the previous generation Canter (TD model), were fitted with a variety of body types and daily workloads varied, but the operators reported fuel savings of up to 16 per cent when compared to a comparable diesel-engined Canter.
The new model takes Hybrid technology to another level. Lithium-ion batteries backed by a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty ensure an affordable ‘green’ solution, while service costs are comparable to a standard, diesel-engined Canter, demonstrated by identical Repair & Maintenance contract prices.
Efficiency is boosted further still by a recuperation system which acts as a re-charging generator, transforming braking and deceleration energy back into useable electricity.
With class leading body payloads of almost five-tonnes, the Canter is in a class of its own. Flexibility in accommodating its different body types makes the new Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid a specialist for a huge range of applications in urban and short-range use.
The youngest member of the new Mercedes-Benz truck product family, the New Atego with Euro VI engine, enters the stage to continue its successful career as a bestseller in the 6.5- to 16-tonne Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) short-radius distribution segment. The Atego already occupies the top rank for its quality, reliability, repair and maintenance costs, and durability. This position will now be strengthened thanks to an entirely new drive system and numerous innovations in the chassis and cabs.
A total of seven New Euro VI engine variants, which can be combined with a broad range of automatic and optional manual transmissions, enable the Atego to be precisely adapted to the specific requirement profiles of a wide variety of short-radius distribution applications.
The use of sophisticated BlueTec 6 exhaust treatment technology, combining both SCR and EGR systems, has led to a 50 per cent reduction in AdBlue consumption compared with its predecessor. The extremely responsive Euro VI engines offer exceptionally high torque even at low revs and consume significantly less fuel, despite particulate and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions that have been reduced by 90 per cent, again due to its upgraded engine.
As a new member to the construction family, the New Mercedes-Benz Arocs will be a serious contender for the limelight on the stand at the CV Show. The Arocs range is offered to match customer’s precise requirements in this extremely tough and diverse sector. The new tipper trucks, concrete mixers, all-wheel drive trucks, semitrailer tractors and rigid chassis vehicles are available as two, three or four-axle vehicles with 16 power output levels ranging from 175 kW (238 hp) through to the 460 kW (625 hp).

The Fleetboard Vehicle Management team will be available to provide assistance on this telematics-supported internet service. FleetBoard provides assistance in optimising transport chains, managing logistics and reducing fuel costs-understanding customers’ cost pressures and growing consumer expectations. Performance Analysis is a key feature which grades the driver based on a series of indicators allowing a fair driver incentive scheme to be integrated and savings to be made.
Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) training is one of the many aspects a truck driver must complete to continue their day to day job. Mercedes-Benz is one of the largest providers of CPC Training in the UK, with a team of fully qualified trainers at Mercedes-Benz Wentworth Park Commercial Vehicles. Training rooms and vehicles including Axor and Actros units are dedicated to the completion of Economic and Defensive Driving modules. With the deadline for drivers to take their CPC training ending September 2014, the team will be available throughout the CV Show to discuss options and answer any questions.
Mercedes-Benz Sales Engineeringwill be making its presence known at the CV Show offering expert guidance and advice to both customers and dealers on vehicle modifications which meet the demands of the individual customer’s requirements.
