Pegasus Leaps into the Future with New Volvo FE Electric

Stourbridge-based skip hire company, Pegasus Skip Hire, has embraced sustainability by adding a new Volvo FE Electric truck to its fleet.

This marks the first operation of an electric skiploader by Volvo Trucks in the UK. Pegasus Skip Hire, a loyal customer of Volvo, made the environmentally conscious choice after visiting the Volvo Trucks Experience Centre (VTEX) in Sweden. The electric truck will be utilized for delivering and collecting skips throughout the West Midlands.

Tony Hall, Director at Pegasus Skip Hire, expressed the company’s commitment to environmental friendliness and their constant search for innovative solutions to achieve their sustainability goals. The opportunity to test Volvo’s electric fleet in Sweden left a lasting impression on the company, as they were impressed by the quality of the vehicles and the fact that Volvo Trucks offers a comprehensive range of electric trucks. Pegasus Skip Hire takes pride in leading the way toward a cleaner and greener future within their industry.

Supplied by Jamie Stanley, Area Sales Manager at Hartshorne Group, the new Volvo FE Electric is equipped with Multilift skiploader bodywork and is powered by two electric motors, delivering a peak torque of 850 Nm. The FE Electric features a two-speed transmission, ensuring a smooth and comfortable driving experience. The truck is equipped with a unique traction control system designed to handle slippery surfaces with ease, and various drive modes allow for customized performance, comfort, and energy usage levels.

With four batteries on board, the truck offers an approximate range of 190 km and can be fully recharged in just 2.3 hours using the 150 kW DC charger installed at Pegasus Skip Hire’s Stourbridge depot.

Tony Hall is confident that the electric truck will seamlessly integrate into their daily operations, and he hopes to expand their electric fleet in the future. He highlights the strong partnership between Pegasus Skip Hire and Volvo, with around 90% of their commercial vehicle fleet now consisting of Volvo trucks. Working with a supplier that understands their business needs and provides support throughout the process has been a positive experience for the company.

Supported by a Volvo Gold Contract, which covers all maintenance and repairs and includes proactive monitoring of batteries and associated components, the FE Electric is expected to operate five days a week and remain in the fleet for seven years. The truck is built on a 4,100 mm wheelbase and features full air suspension. Its day cab is designed with enhanced visibility and safety, thanks to a rear window and an additional lower passenger door window.

Pegasus Skip Hire is a rapidly growing business catering to both commercial and domestic clients, providing skip services across the West Midlands.
