Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) has made its most significant move yet into mainland Europe with the launch of the Plaxton Elitei into the fleet of PolskiBus.com. The move marks another meaningful step in Alexander Dennis’ strategy to identify opportunities in new markets and grow the business. This contract gives ADL a platform from which to project key products into an important area as the Elitei is typically representative of the ADL strategy, that of producing innovative vehicles which offer significant benefits, not least of which is Elitei’s capacity of 75 seats and the promise of class leading economy which has now been well proven in service across the UK.
Colin Robertson, Chief Executive of ADL, described the latest orders as a massive vote of confidence in ADL’s ability to provide “the right products, at the right price, at the right time.”
He commented: “This marks a pivotal moment for the ADL group; the PolskiBus.com order represents an important break-through, taking us into mainland Europe in a significant way – and with a company that is one of the fastest-growing, inter-city coach operators on the Continent. Having been won in the face of fierce competition, it is a strong endorsement from a major player in the European marketplace.”
“The reputation of ADL’s Eliteiinter-deck coach has spread quickly and we are delighted to be launching these vehicles today. We are a fast-moving company and these 20 new coaches will add significantly to our existing fleet of 73 vehicles.”
“Our aim is to align ourselves to suppliers with similar business values and quality standards and these vehicles are opening up that relationship with ADL. All 20 of the new vehicles will operate on the major inter-city routes we’re announcing today.”
Kevin Wood, Director of Business Development for the ADL coach brand, Plaxton, said, “This is a particularly exciting day for ADL, these represent the first Plaxton coaches to enter service with a European operator for a generation and we will be continuing the work we have done with PolskiBus.com to ensure their expectations of these milestone vehicles are fully realised. We are actively pursuing opportunities with a number of other potential customers, Elitei does of course offer significant potential benefits and we firmly believe it can satisfy a niche where high capacity is a demand”
The Elitei was launched in the UK in 2012 and is attractive to customers with a requirement for high capacity, intercity and touring coaches, particularly those who require rapid boarding and alighting for wheelchairs.
The upper cabin can accommodate up to 71 passengers, the lower cabin up to a further four, or three and a wheelchair.
It is available in both left hand steering, for mainland Europe operations, or right hand steering for the UK and other markets.
The 12% Cr stainless steel structure offers a major saving in weight over comparable products constructed from mild steel. Depending on specification, the Elitei can be up to 10% lighter than many comparable vehicles offering huge potential benefits in payload and fuel economy.
The 20 Eliteicoaches for PolskiBus.com will all be based on Volvo Euro5 B11RT three-axle chassis with Volvo I-Shift transmission.
Plaxton became part of Alexander Dennis Limited in the spring of 2007 and at the time employed 350 people, building around 200 coaches per annum and a limited number of small, midi buses. This year it will build circa 250 coaches and 800 buses. It now employs around 600 people at its Scarborough facility in Yorkshire and is Britain’s leading coach bodybuilder.
ADL is the largest British-owned business in the UK automotive sector and in the past six years has been one of the fastest-growing bus and coach manufacturers in the developed world, having tripled turnover to circa £500m in the same period. It employs 2,300 people globally and specialises in the manufacture of lightweight, fuel-efficient city buses and coaches. In recent years ADL has extended its reach significantly through a series of build partnerships, alliances, joint ventures and acquisitions. These now give it a significant presence in China, Asia Pacific and North America as well as the UK and now also mainland Europe.
