Tachographs measuring speed, time and distance, were originally fitted to trucks in Germany in the early fifties. The EEc (now the Eu) later adopted them and they became mandatory across Europe from the early 1980s.

Ever since then drivers have been logging every mile and every minute, and all their rest periods, under a pretty complex set of rules and constraints. Digital tachograhs have been mandated since May 2006, which electronically log the same driver’s hours information as used to appear on the rotating paper disk of the original tachograph systems, and a great deal more besides.
