We all know that a stone chip can be repaired but we get told that if it’s cracked then the screen has to be replaced. This is because by the time the windscreen technician gets on site to repair a crack it’s already contaminated. Cracks contaminate real quick so you’ve got to repair them as soon as they happen. If you, as an operator, have our kit and you catch the crack straight away then it’s really easy to repair it. If it’s spread out to a long crack (up to 12 inches) we add a drill stop at the end to secure it and prevent it from spreading further.
Here’s the Esprit process:
The first step is that we use the blue bur to drill in 5mm away from the end of the crack, our drilling depth is just the tip of the blue bur which is 1mm. Once we have a small drill hole we change to the yellow bur, this has a slightly bigger tip and we are going to use it to make the hole wider, not deeper. Drilling into glass might seem a little daunting but with the right tools it’s much easier than you might imagine!
After this we get the crack stop punch, place it in the crater and tap it. This creates a small bullseye on the end of the crack, the crack moves into the bullseye and then can go no further.
Any stone chip damage that has cracked away can be filled starting in the usual way using the Esprit system. Once the stone chip starts to fill you should also notice that the beginning of the crack is also filling.
the crack, where the UV resin has started to fill it will appear to disappear. This is due the light refraction in the glass. By the way once the resin is cured you will no longer need to view from an angle as the resin will have hardened, bonding the glass back together and its refractive index will have changed to match that of the glass.
We use a syringe and needle to apply resin directly over the crack. Make sure to keep Esprit’s plastic sheet along the crack covering it as you fill. This will keep the resin in the crack.
Once the resin has filled the crack we can apply the UV light for 5 minutes. Once it’s cured through, we then scrape any excess resin from the surface using a blade. That’s the end of the crack repair the vehicle can now be washed, or driven. It’s real easy to do if you catch them as soon as they happen.
If you already have an Esprit kit and want to learn more about the crack repair, then give us a call. We will offer you a training course FOC if you quote FREE3112 (Valid until Dec 31, 2015).
