However, the poll also discovered just 4% of telematics-equipped fleets operate a system capable of identifying fuel-card misuse.

Other findings from the FACTS-TrackCompare Fuel Card Security Survey:

  • More than 10% of fleets not using an integrated tracking/fuel card system suspect employees of fuel-card misuse
  • 8% of fleets using an integrated vehicle tracking/fuel-card system have detected fuel-card misuse
  • Less than a quarter (22%) use fuel cards with chip and pin – the accepted technology for debit and credit cards – to improve security
  • Just 12% of fleets not using an integrated tracking/fuel-card system regard fuel-card misuse as a problem; even so, 65% would consider investing in this type of system

Ninety-five percent of UK vehicle fleets operating a telematics system that integrates with their fuel card say it controls fuel-card use,A total of 301 UK fleets, all equipped with vehicle tracking, took part in the three-week poll, held last month. Fleet sizes: 1-63. Averages size: 11. Vehicles: all types.

Kjell Anderton, a director of TrackCompare.co.uk, said: “This exercise threw up some surprises. For example, although just 12% of fleets believe fuel-card misuse is a problem, almost two-thirds would consider investing in an integrated vehicle tracking/fuel card system. Of course, they may consider it the answer to a problem that could arise in the future.

“Also, in these security-conscious days, I’m amazed fleets are continuing to choose fuel cards that don’t have chip and pin, now used for all credit and debit cards.”
