For the past twenty years, and perhaps a bit longer, the UK Government has been encouraging the migration towards diesel as the fuel of choice for private motorists. All sorts of tax breaks have been in place over the years, until now more than half of all new passenger car registrations are diesel. This compares with less than 15% only 20 years ago.
At the same time they have been trying desperately to get private vehicles out of the city centres by encouraging the use of public transport for travel into the inner cities. Thus we now arrive at the point where a city like Glasgow has fantastic public transport services, with bus services to compete with anywhere in the world.
