Northern Ireland-based abnormal load specialist, Mar-Train Heavy Haulage, has added its first five axle step frame trailer with extending outer boxes and beavertail to its fleet, which will be used to transport heavy-duty Terex crushers and screeners around the UK and Europe.
The SFCLEX 85 model built by Andover Trailers is worth more than £80,000 and is equipped with a low profile neck, with an extendable frame on the outer boxes which can extend by up to 2.5m to accommodate the longer conveyors on the machines.
This trailer is the 13th from Andover Trailers to join Mar-Train’s fleet of approximately 23 tractor units and 70 trailers, but the unique five axle design is the company’s first, and is designed to withstand the extensive weights of the machines it carries. A key feature of the trailer is its ability to hold the load in only 30 per cent of the bed, a normal plant trailer is designed to take the load in 60% of the bed.
The new trailer’s specification includes three fixed and two self-steering BPW axles, with manual and solenoid control, to aid manoeuvrability and minimise tyre wear. BPW air suspension with raise/lower control is also fitted, which can be used to lower the trailer for loading and unloading.
Tim Martin, Managing Director at Mar-Train, says: “The five axle trailer has been designed to a bespoke specification to allow us to transport Terex plant weighing 60 tonnes. We have 12 other Andover heavy haulage trailers that have all been built to carry specific equipment or work in certain industries, and it’s being able to design something exactly to our needs that keeps us coming back to Andover year after year.
“The Andover team looked at the machine we would be carrying and then took the time to design a trailer that fulfils all possible requirements. It’s so refreshing compared to a lot of trailer manufacturers who simply offer a set number of different specifications and say, ‘is that any good to you?’”.
After presenting Andover with the details of the machines the trailer would be carrying, Mar-Train also advised the company the equipment must be robust enough to work in quarries, but its main function would be delivering the Terex crushers and screeners to and from docks.
The trailer is also fitted with two heavy channels running back from the fifth wheel plate, allowing the trailer to sit on stands when travelling unaccompanied on a ferry. The new trailer measures just less than 15m but can extend out a further 2.5m.
Other key features on the trailer include extra-strong hydraulic power toe ramps, four heavy-duty hydraulic steady legs and auto-lube fitted to the ramps and axles. The trailer is also fitted with silver conspicuity markings on the sides and red on the rear, to meet new safety regulations.
Mar-Train Heavy Haulage Ltd was established more than three decades ago to provide an island-wide plant haulage service. The company has grown and now specialises in providing transport solutions for abnormal loads and awkward loads (including wind farms) across Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe.
