For use in the Port of Poole in Dorset, England, Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC) has purchased a new Bobcat S630 skid-steer loader from Kellands (Plant Sales) Ltd, the Authorised Dealer for the Bobcat, Doosan and Montabert ranges for the whole of South West England.
With an area of approximately 14 square miles (36 km2) and with the town of Poole on its shores, Poole Harbour is claimed to be the largest natural harbour in Europe. PHC is the sole employer of the skilled stevedores at the port and offers a full range of freight and passenger ferry and cargo handling operations.
Sharing the navigation channels with sightseeing vessels and leisure craft of all types are cross-Channel freight and passenger roll-on/roll-off ferries along with conventional bulk cargo vessels utilising the port. Against strong competition for continental traffic between the south coast ports, PHC has maintained Poole as a prosperous, medium-sized port well in tune with its harbour environment.
Paul Gillingham, Engineering Manager at PHC, said: “We have been using Bobcat skid-steer loaders for many years and we have always found them to be very suitable for the work in the port, offering unmatched reliability throughout their years of service. This is exemplified by our existing Bobcat 863 loader which we’ve been running trouble-free since its purchase in 1999.”
Among a variety of applications around the port, the new Bobcat loader is used principally to help in stockpiling materials such as sand and clay delivered by truck to the quayside, so that they can be loaded into ships’ holds by the port’s grab cranes. As more and more material is removed from the piles, that remaining becomes too dispersed for the grabs to be effective and it is at this point that the Bobcat loader takes over. Equipped with an optional front door, the new Bobcat S630 skid-steer loader is used to form new mounds of material on the quay which can then be lifted off the quay by the grab cranes.
Similarly, the Port of Poole uses the existing Bobcat 863 loader for shiptrimming applications in ship holds, where it again works in conjunction with crane-mounted grabs on the quayside to unload ships carrying bulk cargoes such as grain and animal feed. The grab begins the process of unloading the ships by taking as much cargo as it can and loading it into trucks on the quayside. As more and more cargo is removed, that remaining again becomes too dispersed for the grab to be effective and at this point the Bobcat 863 loader is lifted into the hold to do a similar job to that performed by the S630 loader.
The Bobcat 863 loader forms new mounds for the grab to work with, employing one of the most important aspects of all Bobcat loaders – their outstanding manoeuvrability, utilising differential steering for highly efficient manoeuvring and super fast cycle times, with a hydrostatic drive enabling precise control of the speed and direction of the loaders, both forwards and backwards, in any situation.
The Bobcat S630 radial lift path skid-steer loader is designed and built to offer the highest levels of performance, efficiency and operator comfort. Powered by the Kubota 55.4 kW V3307-DI-TE3 kW Stage IIIA diesel engine, the S630 is part of the new generation loader range from Bobcat, providing a significant increase in power, hydraulic performance and productivity.
With an operating weight of 3496 kg, a rated operating capacity of 989 kg and a tipping load of 1978 kg, the S630 complements the S650 vertical lift path loader. The standard hydraulic flow on the S630 has been increased by over 30% to 87.1 l/min, providing significantly better attachment performance. The high flow version of this loader, the S630H, offers a hydraulic flow of 115.5 l/min.
Improved operator comfort is a key feature of the S630 new generation loader. The most prominent aspect is the unique forward-positioned Premium Cab, the largest on the market, which has been built in accordance with the axiom that the more comfortable an operator is, the more productive they will be.
The main features of the cab are as follows:
- Forward position offers 30% increase in all-round visibility for the operator
- Forward visibility further enhanced by 40% larger door
- Visibility through top, side and rear windows all significantly enhanced
- Ample adjustment in seat and suspension to suit individual preference
- Performance of heating and air conditioning system increased by 35%
