NFT Distribution fits JOST Low maintenance 5th wheels to latest fleet.
As the UK’s leading chilled food logistics business, NFT is at the forefront of innovation in providing a better service to its clients while also acknowledging its responsibilities to the environment. In looking to fit a lube-free 5th wheel, NFT has selected the JOST product to be factory fitted on 65 Volvo units specified in the last 12 months.
NFT operates a policy of renewing its transport fleet regularly to ensure that it benefits from the latest engine technology in terms of emission control. At the same time, other product improvements, such as the safe, low maintenance 5th wheel from JOST, can also be incorporated with additional benefits such as the weight saving that have been made against the legacy design.
Even a modest weight saving on the tare weight of the vehicle can produce significant savings when multiplied across an entire fleet running 365 days per year. It helps to make the operation more efficient and reduces total food miles by maximising the payload of the vehicle. All of these savings contribute towards the company objectives of minimising emissions and the overall carbon footprint of the business.
The particular challenge when specifying the 5th wheel for this fleet lay in finding a solution which would eliminate grease build-up on the catwalks and service connectors – leading to improved safety and appearance of the vehicles – as well as making the task of coupling and uncoupling trailers much cleaner for the drivers. For a company that delivers chilled food to nearly every supermarket chain in the country, the appearance of its vehicles and drivers is a very important aspect of its image.
Dave Seaton, Fleet Engineer for NFT, comments: “We were looking for a lube-free 5th wheel to specify on the latest batch of vehicles and so we set up a meeting with the local JOST Sales Manager, Jannine Burt. She explained the advantages of the JOST product, which looked to fit the bill precisely. We had a trial unit which we ran for over 6 months, a little over 150,000km, which performed faultlessly. So the decision to specify the product was a no-brainer.”
Jannine Burt, Regional Fleet & Sales Manager for JOST UK LTD explains: “While the top plate liners provide a lube-free connection, it is still essential that the lock jaw is properly lubricated to ensure reliable locking of the king-pin. This task is performed by the ‘LubeTronic 1 Point’ system which provides fully automated lubrication, ensuring that only minimal grease is used in combination with the special coating on the lock jaw. This system ensures that the lock jaw performs reliably without the need for driver intervention.”
The initial order saw 25 JOST lube-free 5th wheels being specified as a factory fit option for the new Volvo units that NFT ordered – an option which is also available with Mercedes and Scania vehicles. Being able to specify the new lube-free 5th wheel as a factory-fit option saves the additional cost of having it fitted by the local dealer. Having operated faultlessly from day one an additional 40 have been specified alongside the latest addition to the fleet.
