Ensuring optimum operational efficiency is a key priority for the modern transport manager. Whilst keeping a fleet moving and earning for the business is essential, inefficiency impedes business growth and can be devastating to profitability.

Making wise choices in the ways in which a fleet manager maintains and optimises the performance of their vehicles is therefore essential. Selecting the right lubricants is a key aspect of this to consider. TOTAL Lubricants are vital partners to fleets of commercial vehicles across a variety of industries.

Their dynamic team of product engineers are highly experienced and work closely with original equipment manufacturers to offer the most up-to-date range of products to their customers. A mainstay of this expert team is Technical Field Engineer Geoff Briggs.

With over 30 years of experience in the oil industry, Geoff is an expert on the role that heavy-duty diesel oils can play in improving engine performance and fuel economy and reducing emissions.

The fleet transport industry is renowned for its tight margins; it is therefore understandable that fleet operators may sometimes go for the cheaper option. However, when it comes to lubricant selection, Geoff says that this is a false economy.

“Investing in a premium, low sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur (SAPS) oil may appear to be an unnecessary expense if the operator believes all oils are basically the same,” he said, speaking exclusively to FACTS.

“However, this could not be further from the truth. Opting for a premium, low SAPS solution extends the lifespan of engine components. In particular, it helps protect the diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the long run.

“If an incorrect or low-quality product is used, excessive ash build-up in the DPF will occur which dramatically shortens its lifespan and means the operator must pay for an expensive, premature replacement. This amounts to thousands of pounds in replacement costs, particularly if extrapolated over a fleet numbering in the hundreds or thousands.”

The issue is complicated further given the increased proliferation of Euro 6 engines and increased scrutiny over C02, NoX and other pollutant emissions. To account for this, TOTAL now offer the RUBIA 9900 FE (Fuel Economy) 5W-30 grade which has been developed for all types of diesel engines, from Euro 5 and previous iterations to the latest Euro 6 engines.

“TOTAL RUBIA 9900 FE 5W-30 is the ideal solution for the latest generation of diesel engines equipped with post-treatment systems, like DPFs,” said Geoff. “It offers extended oil drain intervals due to class-leading anti-oxidant and corrosion properties, which gives significant cost savings in maintenance, plus excellent engine protection and piston cleanliness.”

Outstanding detergent, dispersant and anti-wear properties also keep the engine clean and enable effective control of soot, sludge and piston deposits. By maintaining the components to a high standard and thus improving engine performance, greater fuel economy is achieved.

Geoff said: “RUBIA TIR 9900 FE 5W-30’s FUEL ECONOMY technology helps fleets save 1% fuel on average compared to a 40-grade reference lubricant. This value can reach 3% if used in combination with FUEL ECONOMY transmission lubricants. Greater fuel economy means less fuel will be burned, which in turn results in reduced emissions, which is ideal if we hope to achieve ambitious government air pollution targets.”

The greater proliferation of electric and alternative-fuel vehicles more broadly also poses new challenges for the lubricants market. But once again, TOTAL is at the forefront of innovation and now offers a custom-designed solution for industrial and utility vehicles and electric buses.

“The issues posed by higher transmission rotation speeds in electric vehicles, as well as heat exchange in electric batteries, had to be accounted for,” said Geoff. “Total Rubia EV Fluid has been designed with exactly these requirements in mind and forms part of our Total Climate Strategy and our ambition to reduce the carbon footprint of the energy products we offer.”

TOTAL does not simply keep pace with change but drives the industry forward to cater for the very latest demands of the modern heavy-duty commercial vehicle sector. The launch of both the RUBIA 9900 FE (Fuel Economy) 5W-30 and Rubia EV Fluid are the latest innovations from TOTAL that directly support this.
