Based in Blaydon near Newcastle, Premier Truck Hire is the North-East’s premier commercial and municipal truck hire specialist. But the company’s reach extends to service all manner of public and private sector organisations across the UK, as Director Martyn Tailford and Hire Manager Tony Brown tell FACTS.

Premier Truck Hire has undergone significant evolution in the more than 40 years since its launch in 1977.

“My father started the business initially as a tool hire company,” said Martyn. “In 1993, the truck hire division of the business began. We subsequently became a limited company in 2004. Then, four years later in 2008, we diversified from our previous focus on municipal vehicles into the wider haulage market, expanding our fleet with the introduction of box vans, curtainsiders, and tractor units for example.”

This diversification continued, with the current 93 vehicle-strong hire fleet now including a wide variety of equipment, such as 3.5 tonne dropsiders all the way up to 44-tonne tractor units, as well as skip loaders, hook loaders, and refuse collection vehicles from 7.5 tonne up to 32-tonne front end loaders.

“Our continued growth necessitated a move to new, larger premises in Blaydon in 2013,” added Martyn. “The site has a seven-bay workshop, where we repair and maintain 147 customer vehicles as well as our own fleet.”

In 2014, a paint shop in the building next door to the workshop was opened, incorporating a 60-foot spray booth. This allowed Premier Truck Hire to add the painting of trailers to their service portfolio, an option which has gone from strength to strength in recent years.

“We now carry out all types of paintwork for new and second-hand chassis from all the main manufacturers, including Scania, DAF, Mercedes and Volvo,” added Martyn. “Furthermore, earlier this year, we opened a truck bodybuilding division in another unit which we acquired. This has a dedicated 70-foot long shot-blasting booth built into it. Whilst we can now build bodies for manufacturers, we can also refurbish refuse vehicles and mount them onto new chassis for customers. This means they make a significant saving compared to the price of a new build.”

The organisation is further bolstered by its sales division which sources vehicles for customers and can offer a stock of used, quality vehicles on site available for viewing.

Fast response times puts PTH ahead of the competition

Unexpected vehicle downtime is the bane of any transport manager’s existence. An immobilised fleet can cause deadlines to be missed, loads to expire, services to be missed and contracts to be lost. The experienced team at Premier Truck Hire know this first-hand and offer expedited response times for their clients.

“For our hire division, where we really excel is our response times,” commented Tony. “If customers experience any issues, we can send technicians out for same-day repairs. If the vehicle cannot be fixed, we will send a replacement out on the same day, if not first thing the next morning. This is something we really pride ourselves on; minimising customer downtime and keeping their vehicles hard at work.”

This has proved to be an attractive proposition over the years as Premier Truck Hire has established partnerships with a great number of public and private sector organisations.

Martyn commented: “We work extensively with Scottish Borders Council – we hire out refuse collection vehicles to them. Over the years, they have probably been one of our top customers, but we have clients up and down the country, from down south in London to up north in Inverness.

“We have the capability to offer our diverse range of vehicles and services to cater for a wide range of customer requirements nationwide,” concluded Martyn. “We are proud to be from the North-East but our reach extends far further.”
