Ryder has completed delivery of its 100th truck to Premier Paper Group, the UK’s leading independent paper merchant. This latest deal adds 17 DAF 18 tonne and 26 tonne rigids to the expanding Premier fleet.
With 18 locations across the UK, Premier Paper delivers more than 4,000 product lines to 30,000 customers, from large national wholesaling chains to small independent stationers.
Premier’s fleet ranges from 7.5 tonne to 26 tonne rigids and 44 tonne tractor units, with the rigids being custom-built to Premier’s operational requirements. “Paper tends to be a weighty commodity so our trucks were built with low height and compact bodywork to handle weight rather than bulk,” comments Adrian Fraser, Premier Paper’s group fleet manager. “In addition, because virtually all of our trucks operate on daytime deliveries, we specified trucks without sleeper cabs.
Ryder began supplying Premier Paper in 2003. Fraser adds: “We originally owned and maintained all of our trucks, but the all-inclusive proposition and full maintenance contract hire package provided by Ryder has allowed us to refocus management time on our core business.
“In addition, the positive management and effective communication channels we now have in place with Ryder has seen our contract hire fleet grow from just a few vehicles to the 100 we now have. In line with business growth, we will shortly increase the Ryder contract hire fleet to 108 vehicles, while retaining a couple of owned vehicles for unexpected peaks in demand.
Robin White, Ryder’s sales and marketing director, comments: “The delivery of the 100th contract hire vehicle to Premier Paper is not just a landmark in our relationship with the company, but demonstrates how working in partnership with a customer can help them grow and expand their business. We look forward to supporting Premier’s continued business growth.
Premier invests in new ‘green efficiency’ vehicle fleet
The Premier Paper Group, the UK’s largest independent paper merchant, has recently invested in a number of new green efficiency vehicles with the latest driver technology, enhancing its fleet whilst at the same time underlining its green credentials. This investment in new fleet vehicles by Premier includes 12 new trucks, 2 x 12tonne and 10 x 18tonne vehicles, taking its total fleet to some 132 trucks across its regional branches.
These latest additions to the Premier fleet are all Daf Euro 6 CF trucks, which are THE benchmark vehicles for long distance road transport, and have been designed for maximum transport efficiency.
One of the developments behind the Daf’s Euro 6 engine, the PACCAR MX-13, was the Euro 6 emission legislation, so the PACCAR MX-13 provides more opportunities to optimise combustion to ensure the lowest possible emission and noise levels, and the best possible fuel efficiency are all achieved. Its systems now function even more accurately and faster, to ensure that the optimum mixture of air, exhaust gases and fuel is injected at all times. This is also key to achieving maximum efficiency and low emissions.
To meet the stringent Euro 6 emission requirements whilst ensuring the highest fuel efficiency, DAF has combined its advanced PACCAR Euro 6 engines with various exhaust gas after treatment technologies; an SCR catalytic convertor and a diesel particulate filter. The design of the CF Euro 6 is extremely functional, providing optimum aerodynamics and maximum cooling to ensure low fuel consumption, providing a higher return per kilometre, and a lower environmental impact.
Consideration was also given to driver ergonomics and safety systems including Lane departure warning systems (LDWS) and Adaptive cruise control (ACC) and Forward collision warning (FCW), with automatic braking using distance trackers.
The automatic gearbox and driver performance assistance (DPA) helps the driver drive to optimum performance to ensure maximum fuel efficiency and reduces erratic driving behaviours. The DPA system gives the driver information on a colour screen monitoring driving style in heavy traffic, anticipation and braking measured through gear changes.
The new Daf Euro 6 CF trucks will be added to Premier’s regional branches at Dartford, Newton Abbot, Minworth, Leeds, Southampton, Bury St Edmunds, Washington and Glasgow.
The Washington and Dartford branch trucks will all be sporting the new Premier livery (Trees make Paper, Paper makes Trees). Elsewhere, the Reel Paper division in Castle Donington is due to take delivery of their new fleet on the 1st March, which will include 2 x 26tonne and 3 x 18tonne trucks, all of which will be curtain sider vehicles and will be on new 2016 plates.
Commenting on the new vehicle investment, Premier Paper Group Fleet Manager, Adrian Fraser, stated, “This represents a considerable investment by the company and demonstrates a firm commitment to providing the best possible customer service.”
“We chose Ryder to supply our vehicles on full lease and maintenance agreements following lengthy negotiations, securing the best price deal to meet our business needs. Ryder’s value added service is second to none with effective communications throughout their organisation, this is very important to us as we offer a reliable delivery service to customers right across the UK.”
“A lot of consideration was also given to the different vehicle types available on the market, suitable for transporting our goods, which is why we chose the DAF LF range. The DAF range of trucks will also help us lower our carbon emissions.”
