On Saturday and Sunday, March 22/23 two 131 tonne transformers left the dockside at Dundee, for their final destination, near Tummel Bridge just west of Pitlochry in the Scottish Highlands.

87On Saturday and Sunday, March 22/23 two 131 tonne transformers left the dockside at Dundee, for their final destination, near Tummel Bridge just west of Pitlochry in the Scottish Highlands. The geography is significant, as Tummel Bridge is almost exactly halfway between Beauly, just outside of Inverness in the north, and Denny, just west of Falkirk, in the industrial belt between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Between Beauly and Denny, a new high voltage power transmission line is being built. To be completed in 2015, this new transmission line is “key to delivering Scotland’s renewable electricity targets and essential to connect wind, wave and tidal projects in the north of the country to the grid” according to Niall Stewart, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, “Quite simply, there can be no wave or tidal industry in Scotland without it, so it is great to see SSE’s (The main contractor) section on track to be finished in 2015, by when Scotland will be generating more than half of its own electricity needs through renewable sources.” …Read More
